Canberra’s public playgrounds and play spaces to be smoke-free

Public playgrounds and play spaces in the ACT will be smoke-free as of Wednesday 7 September, Assistant Minister for Health Meegan Fitzharris announced this week.

The declaration of these new smoke-free areas is the first to be made by the ACT Government under the Smoke-Free Public Places Amendment Bill 2016, which was passed in the ACT Legislative Assembly earlier this year. read more

Spate of vandalism in public places

The ACT Government has told us they are very concerned about the recent vandalism of public assets after a string of fires were started in the public facilities at Yerrabi Pond and Tuggeranong town park and the play equipment at John Knight Park was repeatedly damaged.

“On the night of Wednesday 25 May, security personnel arrived at Yerrabi Pond District Park to find that a small fire had been lit inside the public toilets, causing damage to cubicles,” Fleur Flanery, Director of City Services said. read more

$3.35 million for better playgrounds and parks across Canberra

Families across Canberra will be the winners in this year’s ACT Budget with a $3.35 million investment in parks and playgrounds across the territory, announced Minister for Transport and Municipal Services Meegan Fitzharris today.

“Four playgrounds will receive an investment of $900,000 in this year’s Budget for major upgrades that will provide a range of fun new equipment for kids of all ages, including Boswell Street in Florey, Jacobs Street in Evatt, Howell Street in Gowrie and Yerrabi Pond District Park in Gungahlin,” Minister Fitzharris said. read more
